MEET Boylan Slat, the 20-year-old with a radical plan to save the planet by teaching the ocean to clean itself.
Slat, of the Netherlands, has an ingenious solution to stop the plastic pollution of our seas using natural currents to gather millions of tons of debris. And scientists believe he’s onto a winner.
It was when diving in Greece as a 16-year-old — and finding more plastic bags than fish — that Slat became concerned about the impending environmental catastrophe threatening wildlife, human health and, ultimately, our survival.
He began investigating the issue with a high school friend, creating a science project that won a design prize from a prestigious Dutch university. He left school and embarked on an aerospace engineering degree — but put it on hold as his revolutionary project gathered steam. Read Full Article
