Children & Nature Network International Conference
Session: The Nature of Science, STEM, and Stewardship: Strategies for Transformative Teaching
The Nature of Science workshop will offer teachers and non-formal educators effective strategies and resources for engaging kids with natural phenomena, using nature as a context for learning, scaffolding a progression from teacher-directed activities to student-directed problem-solving, and organizing the type of projects that research shows will be engaging and meaningful to groups underrepresented in STEM fields, including children of color and girls in general. This workshop will include an outdoor component, so attendees should dress for the weather and bring refillable water bottles. Participants will learn tips for taking students outdoors, and explore free resources including curriculum, citizen science projects, ecoSTEM Kits, films, and an interactive web platform to prep students for Project Hero Quests. The group will investigate and implement GREAT Project Pathways: a suite of tools that students can use to build their own adventures and direct schoolyard projects that solve authentic environmental problems. Note: This session is offsite with box lunch provided. The bus will depart for the Temescal Beach House at 10:15 am and return at 4:30 pm.
