Garden Biochemistry

Students will explore compounds, mixtures, emulsions, states of matter, and physical and chemical changes using food harvested from the school garden. Students will also engage in an engineering design challenge to build a solar garden cooker to demonstrate their understanding of heat transfer and insulation.

Concepts: Physical & Chemical Changes

Essential Questions

  • How can I use food harvested from the garden to demonstrate and explain mixtures, compounds, and emulsions?
  • What is the difference between a chemical and a physical change?
  • What are examples of physical and chemical changes that take place involving food?
  • How can heat convection, reflection, conduction and absorption be demonstrated in a solar cooker?
