Project Learning Garden

The Captain Planet Foundation’s innovative Project Learning Garden program integrates gardens with core subject lessons, connects gardens to school cafeterias, provides professional development for teachers to provide project-based learning to students and maintains the garden during the summer. The program has school gardens DeKalb, Fulton, Gwinnett and Cobb counties. The foundation was recently at Burgess-Peterson Academy in east Atlanta. In September, FoodCorps, a national farm to school organization that connects children in underserved communities to real food, will expand to Georgia, where Georgia Organics will serve as its official state host organization. Eight FoodCorps service members will dedicate one year of full-time public service in school food systems, including the DeKalb County School District, working with service site organizations such as the Captain Planet Foundation, the Athens Land Trust and the Northeast Georgia Farm to School Program. Service members will expand hands-on nutrition education programs, build and tend school gardens and bring high-quality local foods into school cafeterias.
