Pond Restoration in Philadelphia

Grantee: Wissahickon Charter School (WCS) – Philadelphia, PA

Project Title: Pond Restoration at Awbury Arboretum

Grant Description: Every year, the mission of the Wissahickon Charter School’s (WCS) 4th graders is to study water systems and watersheds as an environmental theme in accordance to state standards.  Then, they are encouraged to implement a service project to better their surrounding community.

WCS’s Awbury campus is located next door to the Awbury Arboretum, a 55-acre preserved nature area that WCS regularly uses for outdoor learning. WCS has furthered its relationship with the Awbury Arboretum while also engaging its students in regular outdoor learning in order to pursue its unique and impactful mission.

WCS partnered with Awbury Arboretum to restore the rare urban wetland and serve as an extension of the classroom for students. Arboretum personnel supported student learning throughout the project, especially through their expertise of the arboretum’s history and current ecological state.

Program Impact: The materials purchased with Captain Planet Foundation funding are all reusable and will be used by fourth graders every year to monitor water quality at the Arboretum, learn about native and invasive species, and implement their annual service learning project. Through Wissahickon Charter’s ongoing partnership with the Awbury Arboretum, this project will continue indefinitely.
