Real Learning Real Work Program

Grantee: North Olympic Salmon Coalition

Project Title: Real Learning Real Work Program

This is a great program for its ability to show students skills that they will directly use in the real world whether it be for future careers, environmental stewardship in their home communities, or leadership skills. The program provides students with a sense of ownership.

– A North Olympic Salmon Coalition Offical

Grant Type: ecoSolution

Description:

The Real Learning, Real Work program takes 7th-grade students onto actual salmon habitat restoration sites and connects them with restoration practitioners and scientists. The program challenges students to apply their Science, Technology, Engineering and Math skills to a real-world restoration problem. Students assess the degraded habitat, determine restoration actions they can take, design their solution and implement and monitor their work. Through this experience, students become critical-thinking future leaders and stewards of their local environment.

Continuous impact/Community engagement:

The program has instilled a sense of ownership and responsibility into the students and has taught them how to care for their local salmon communities. It is planned to continue in 3 of the schools that the North Olympic Salmon Coalition worked in.
