Building Sustainable Change in Kuwinda: A Community-Led Approach to Waste Management

In the informal settlement of Kuwinda, on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya, over 5,000 residents have lived for years without access to a formal waste management system. Trash often accumulated in open areas or was burned, contributing to health risks and environmental degradation.

That began to change thanks to Project Kuwinda, led by Natalie Bullut through her Season of Solutions campaign.

Natalie partnered with local organizations—including Mviringo Africa and the Kibarazani Youth Group—to introduce practical, community-led solutions to waste management. The goal wasn’t just to clean up the area, but to support residents in building a system they could manage and sustain themselves.

So far, the team has hosted educational workshops for over 50 community members and collected data from around 100 households to better understand waste habits and challenges. This helped them shape future outreach and ensure the project responded directly to the community’s needs.

The result? Kuwinda now has its first designated waste collection site, and weekly waste pickups are underway—a major shift for the area. Natalie and her team also held meetings with local landlords, government officials, and other stakeholders to keep everyone aligned and involved.

Natalie’s project is just one example of how Season of Solutions empowers young leaders to create meaningful, locally driven change. These aren’t one-time cleanups—they’re the beginning of long-term improvements in health, environment, and quality of life.
