Houston, TX – This morning, Captain Planet Foundation COO, Latoya Henry, was hosted by Principal Kimberly Wells of Dr. Shirley J. Williamson Elementary School, to celebrate the impactful environmental work of its students as part of the 2024 Green Heart STEM Challenge.

The event honored the H20 Warriors team, a group of dedicated students who were winners of the 2024 Green Heart STEM Challenge – WATER Edition, a program of Captain Planet Foundation, a 33-year old organization with a mission to work collaboratively to engage and empower the next generation of problem-solvers for the planet. The program is funded by Accenture and Susan J. Klein; and presented in partnership with Harris County Department of Education.

As part of the Green Heart STEM Challenge – WATER Edition, students across Houston, Texas submitted innovative projects focused on addressing local environmental issues surrounding water. The H20 Warriors team’s focus on the school’s drinking water stood out, inspiring the judges with their commitment to water justice. The 2024 GHSC judges included: Steven David, Deputy Chief of Staff for Mayor Whitmire; Meera Victor, VP at Carollo Engineering; and Riya Santra, a Sustainability Consultant at Accenture.

In recognition of their efforts, the team’s solution was brought to life through the donation of two new filtered water refill stations installed in the school cafeteria. In addition to the water refill station, a commemorative plaque celebrates students team members, including: Iris Gainoushonor, Kelis Gladney, Da’Miyah Mitchell, Josue Munoz, and Inderyi Quiroz. The plaque will stand as a testament to these students and the impact and importance of student-led initiatives in shaping a sustainable future.

The 2025 Green Heart STEM Challenge – WIND Edition, asking students to create solutions to single-use plastics, fast fashion, and e-waste, launches on January 13th. Interested educators can find more information at www.captainplanetfdn.org
