Materials
- Roots, Stems, Leaves song by Banana Slug String Band
- Roots, Stems, Leaves song Lyric Posters
- Plant Parts Scavenger Hunt handout (1 per small group)
Procedures
- In a whole group gathering space in the garden, review the plant parts by singing Roots, Stems, Leaves by Banana Slug String Band (see Lyrics Posters here). After each verse, allow students to explore the garden to find that plant part while singing the chorus – at the end of the chorus they have to freeze pointing to that plant part. Students can sing the chorus again while they return to the whole group gathering space to sing the next plant part verse.
- Remind students that while many plants grow differently (underground, vines, bushes, trees, etc), each plant will have each of the main plant parts (roots, stems, leaves) so that it can get what it needs to grow. During a certain stage of its life cycle, some plants will have a fruit and flower too (Review of Plant Doctor activities).
- Provide students with a Plant Parts Scavenger Hunt so they can sketch three different plants they see growing in the garden and label the plant parts on each.
