Mapping the Garden

Students will use a coordinate plane arranged on a raised bed to describe the plants that live within it to students that are not looking at the bed but simply drawing the plants and their location based on the students’ descriptions. At the conclusion of the activity, students will check their accuracy.

Concepts: Using a Coordinate Plane

Essential Questions

  • How can we use a coordinate system to communicate locations?

Standards Addressed

Focus
  • CCSS.M.5.G.1. Students will use axes to define a coordinate system. Understand (x,y) convention.
  • CCSS.M.5.G.2. Students will represent real world and math problems by graphing points in a coordinate plane and interpreting coordinate values of points.
