The Captain Planet Foundation held its annual Benefit Gala one of the Southeast’s largest eco-benefits, on Nov. 16 at Flourish Atlanta. The charitable evening recognizes extraordinary environmental change-making and raises funds for the Foundation’s mission to engage and empower young people to be environmental problem-solvers through grant giving and Foundation programs. The event raised more than $750,000.
Chuck Leavell, conservationist, author, Rolling Stones keyboardist and Allman Brothers Band member, received the Superhero for Earth award for his dedication to forest conservation. Richard Louv, journalist, author (“Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder”) and chairman and co-founder of the Children & Nature Network, received the Exemplar award. Brad Bartlett, president of Dole Packaged Foods, received the Corporate Superhero Award. There were special musical performances by Leavell, Julian Lennon and Collective Soul (E Roland, Jesse Triplett, Johnny Rabb, Dean Turpin and Dean Roland).
“Green carpet” arrivals also included media mogul Ted Turner, among others. Guests mingled with celebrities and civic leaders, enjoyed live musical entertainment, bid on stellar live and silent auction items featuring one-of-a-kind trips and eco-luxury experiences and enjoyed a cocktail reception and dinner.
The Gala’s premiere sponsor is Delta Air Lines. Presenting sponsors are The Atlantan/Modern Luxury; Davis, Pickren, Seydel & Sneed; Isdell Family Foundation; Jane Smith Turner Foundation; and Turner Foundation. Sustaining partners are Active Production & Design; The Coca-Cola Company; Cartoon Network; Crawford Media Services; Dole Packaged Foods; Drummond; Kellogg Garden Products; Level Growth; Peralta-Ramos Charitable Trust; and Ray C. Anderson Foundation. Gala co-chairs are Roy Neill and Pamela Atkins.
