Grantee: Annunciation B.V.M. School – Mc Sherrystown, PA / 2012
Project Title: Solar Car
Description: Thirty-nine 8th grade students from the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin School gained an understanding of how solar energy works and the careers that support it.
Ms. Sherry Donovan a recruitment specialist/advisor from Hagerstown Community College enlightened the students about the different career choices that involve alternative energy technology and which high school classes would prepare them for these careers. Mrs. Donovan brought a slide presentation and take home materials for the students to continue their research into alternative energy careers.
The schools mobile science lab Advancing Science conducted a solar lab with the 8th-grade students. They then assembled beginner level solar kits that demonstrated the principles of solar energy. The students also took a field trip to a solar farm operated by Adams Electric. They were treated to a tour of the solar farm and a presentation on how solar energy is obtained, generated and stored.
Continuous impact / Community engagement: Since chemistry and chemical reactions, such as those created by solar power, are part of the 8th-grade science curriculum the school plans on continuing to use the solar kits.
