Goal
Students will take their understanding of soil erosion to explore conservation solutions
Estimated Time
45 MinutesSetting Required
InsideStandards
- S5E1. Students will identify surface features of the Earth caused by constructive and destructive processes.
- a. Identify surface features caused by constructive processes.
- Deposition (Deltas, sand dunes, etc.)
- b. Identify and find examples of surface features caused by destructive processes.
- Erosion (water—rivers and oceans, wind)
- Weathering
- Impact of organisms
- a. Identify surface features caused by constructive processes.
Materials
- What is Soil Conservation? from Conserve Energy Future: http://www.conserve-energy-future.com/methods-of-soil-conservation.php
Procedures
- Read about Soil Conservation as a whole group from the article http://www.conserve-energy-future.com/methods-of-soil-conservation.php
- Divide the 23 methods of soil conservation amongst students for them to each further research and prepare a short presentation about.
- Select the methods of soil conservation that can be implemented in your garden and put them into practice. Multiple methods can be tested against each other – even using a leaf blower to test against the “wind” after sufficient time has been taken for each of the methods to be effective.
