- Remind students that most plants like to grow when there is not a threat of frost (which occurs at 32 degrees Fahrenheit). Discuss with students why it’s important to plan garden planting accurately (planting too early could result in freeze damage, planting too late doesn’t take advantage of the full growing season).
- Challenge students to determine when it’s a good time to plant a spring garden based on weather data they’ve collected it (if it is spring time) or based on historic weather data (from sites like: http://www.intellicast.com/local/history.aspx?location=USGA0028).
- Check student guesses with resources like the farmer’s almanac for the average last frost date or other local growing guides from organizations like extension agencies or master gardeners.
